Entertaiment is often associated with amusement, but it can also involve other emotions and serve serious purposes. It may prepare children for adult responsibilities, such as attending performances or childrearing; help people gain insight through ritual, religious festival or satire; develop skills needed for sports or music; or provide physical or psychological exercise. Entertainment can be experienced on any scale: from a private experience chosen by an individual from a now extensive array of pre-recorded products; to a meal enjoyed with friends; to a performance staged for thousands or broadcast to a global audience. Stories like Scheherazade, for example, can be retold and inspire many other forms of entertainment – for example, orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel, films by Pasolini and a number of innovative video games.
